Bengal has been well-known for its agricultural land, paddy production, fast-flowing river with aquatic animals having their habitats. This can be the major reason why fish and rice emerged as the primary source of food for the Bengalis. Bengal is not just restricted to rice and fish, but it has got a wide variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes too. This may include dal (lentil soup), posto( vegetables made with poppy seeds), fish curry, mutton curry, etc.

Bengali cuisines are widely cooked in mustard oil and it’s seen as the medium of cooking. It gives a unique flavor to the dishes and thereby increasing their taste. The Bengali cooking becomes special with the use of the finest spices and flavors, making them stand out. Some of the traditional recipes are stated below:-
- Chor Chori – A vegetarian Bengali recipe, prepared with a fresh mix of vegetables such as potatoes, cauliflower, brinjal, and pumpkin.
- Bhapaa Aloo – A potato dish, made with a mixture of certain unique and appetizing flavors of panch phoron, mustard oil, and coconut paste.
- Doi Maach – A thick and spicy fish curry. Doi Maach has marinated pieces of fish cooked in a yogurt-based flavor with soothing spices. It can be served along with steamed rice for a delightful meal.
- Bengali Lamb Curry – Lamb immersed in a comforting yogurt base, prepared with onions, garlic, and chilies in mustard oil with mustard seeds, almonds, and castor sugar that adds a sweet tone to the overall dish.
- Patishapta – they are pancakes or thin crepes, cooked with a blend of flour, rice flour, and semolina. They are stuffed with desiccated coconut and jaggery filling making it all the more mouth-watering
- Bengali style chana Dal – This is one of the flavorsome and craved Bengali dishes. Its ingredients comprise of coconut, ghee, and few Bengali spices. They are typically served with steamed rice or roti’s offering a satisfying meal.
